While so many are retiring to Florida, there
is a new kid on the block for senior living. Maine has become one of the
best places to spend your retirement years. There are as many reasons to
retire in Maine as there are beautiful beaches.
Maine is scenically beautiful, historically interesting and incredibly
peaceful. Retirees in Maine can enjoy a relaxed pace, friendly people and
fresh clean air. The changing seasons in Maine provide senior residents with
something to look forward to - gorgeous budding gardens in spring, warm
breezes in summer, spectacular foliage in fall, and the delight of fresh
fallen snow in winter.
Maine has retirement options from independent living to planned retirement
communities and assisted living facilities with progressive nursing care for
the elderly throughout the state. Some of the best medical treatments are
available in Maine at York Hospital and Goodall in Southern Maine, Maine
Medical and Mercy in Portland.
Maine’s seniors aren’t just getting old - reading a book in a rocking chair
on the porch. Maine retirees are active, enjoying the great outdoors and
engaging their minds in the rich cultural scene that Maine offers from
summer theatre to thriving historical societies and a diverse art and music
scene. After all this is the land that inspired Andrew Wyeth’s art work -
Christine, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “The Lighthouse”, creative
fiction by E.B. White of Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little fame and Stephen
King, and Linda Greenlaw’s “The Lobster Chronicles” and cookbooks to name
just a few.
According to an article in DownEast magazine, “Maine classrooms are filling
up with seniors looking to challenge their minds long after their memories
of grade school have faded.” Maine’s 55 plus population is more involved,
choosing education seminars, nature walks and talks, and historical tours
and lectures over just going to see the latest movie at the cinema or
knitting a sweater. Fortunately Maine has a strong art community and
historical preservation society that offers continuing education on Maine’s
maritime past, the Native Americans and early settlers’ colonization, and
the art and literature of Maine.
The
retirement communities of Maine offer plenty to do, with daily activities
within the retirement settlement to day trips to Portland’s Old Port or to
L.L. Bean in Freeport, and guided kayak or canoe tours on a Maine river.
The
health benefits of living in the great state of Maine go beyond native
blueberries and fresh steamed lobster (which is very low in
calories and
cholesterol despite its reputation of being drowned in butter).
If you are thinking about retiring to Maine, come stay for a week, a month
or a season to see if Vacationland is the right retirement heaven for you.
