Castine,
Maine

Castine
is a little harder to reach, but worth the effort on your trip up the coast
of Maine. Castine is home to Maine Maritime Academy, beautiful 18th century
historic seaside homes, Dyce lighthouse, and several forts.
Castine is one of the oldest communities in Maine, occupied since the early
1600s by Native Americans, and later by the French, Dutch and British as
both a trading post and nautical fort. The French called Castine’s peninsula
Pentagoet during their occupation, then “Castin” for the French officer
awarded a King’s grant for this seaside area. Visitors can see Dyce
Headlight which is now a private residence. Fort Madison features grass
bunkers and a park with a sweeping lawn offering views of the Castine harbor
and the luxury yachts coming and going from this
protected,
pretty spot. Another great place to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of
Castine is Wadsworth Cove beach, also great around sunset due to its western
exposure.
Castine is a perfect seaside village to walk the tree lined streets and view
the architecture of the grand summer cottages, Inns and historic homes. The
Manor Inn is the former summer mansion of the Commodore of Boston Yacht
Club, now an Inn and gourmet restaurant. The Pentagoet Inn is located in
town with a charming historic pub and rooms for rent.
For
activities in Castine, there is the Castine Golf Club, kayak and bike
rentals, and boat cruises, or visit the Castine Historical Society, museums,
library and art galleries.
Your passage to Castine from Stockton Springs is marked by the magnificent
Penobscot Narrows Observatory Bridge, the tallest bridge observatory in the
world, and the only observatory bridge in the Western Hemisphere at 420 feet
(42 stories). This spectacular Penobscot Narrows suspension bridge with
obelisk towers made of local granite opened in 2006, at a cost of $85
million. The bridge provides spectacular views of the Penboscot River and
Bay along its 2,120 foot expanse over Verona Island. This is also the
location of Fort Knox, Maine’s largest historic fort, dating from 1884
strategically built on the narrows of the Penobscot River to protect from
naval attack.
