Maine's Mid-Coast
Region
Maine's
mid coast is dramatic with peninsulas like fingers reaching out to sea for
treasures. With a strong history of explorers and fishermen, this part of
Maine is rich in heritage, and delicious seafood, with spectacular sights -
lighthouses, beaches,
plus some of Maine's best restaurants,
inns and lodges to stay at during your own Maine coast tour.
Lobster traps and clam shacks, crashing waves on granite shores and the tide
lapping on the beach, these are images of midcoast Maine. The same scenery
that inspired the Wyeth family of artists, boat builders and lobsterman,
remains in many ways unchanged.
Each
peninsula on Maine's dramatic coast deserves at least a day of exploration
to quaint, out-of-the-way seaside villages, departing from Route 1 to see
colonial homes, artist galleries, seaside farms, lighthouses, and lobster
shacks - for the perfect lobster roll with a view.
Midcoast Maine is also rich with festivals and farmers markets, ever
changing like the kaleidoscope of seasonal colors from April through
October.
Entering
Maine's Midcoast from Brunswick,
home to Bowdoin College, you can descend toward the sea on Harpswell Neck or
the next finger of Bailey
Island and Orrs Island which are connected by a unique cribstone bridge
- nicely viewed from popular Cook's Lobster Pound.
As you travel onward to Bath, where
the Maine Maritime Museum is based, you can follow the Kennebec River
towards Phippsburg, Sebasco and popular Popham Beach State Park. Georgetown
Island, connected by a bridge, leads you to the very scenic Reid State Park
and beach, Five Islands in Sheepscot Bay, and picturesque Robinhood Cove.
Boothbay Harbor
is a top midcoast Maine destination for its waterfront lodging, lobster
restaurants and scenic boat tours plus festivals throughout the year. But a
trip to Southport Island, Linekin Neck, or neighboring Ocean Point offer
stunning coastal drives as well.
From Newcastle and
Damariscotta, as you travel down
Pemaquid Point through
the town of Bristol and New Harbor where you are rewarded with fantastic
scenery, one of Maine's best lighthouses and several great beaches. Be sure
to get on a tour boat from New Harbor to beautiful
Monhegan Island for a day to enjoy
Maine life the way it used to be.
St
George is the next midcoast peninsula as you tour Down East from Thomaston.
Port Clyde at the tip offers great views of Georges Islands, Monhegan and
Metinicus, with boat tours leaving from the docks. Pretty Maine towns like
Tenants Harbor and Spruce Head await on your way up the coast to
Owls Head, home of the famous Owls
Head Lighthouse and more great beaches.
The Region of
Rockland,
Rockport,
Camden,
Lincolnville, Northport,
Belfast and Searsport are among the most popular for their year round
activities from boating, festivals and museums, to golf, hiking and even
skiing. The Camden region offers so many great inns, bed and breakfast,
hotels and resorts so you can truly enjoy all there is to do in Penobscot
Bay including boat trips to Vinalhaven, North Haven or Isleboro, and hiking,
biking or driving up Mt Battie for panoramic Penboscot views.
