The Maine Highlands - Katahdin-Moosehead Region

 KATAHDIN MOOSEHEAD

The waters and mountains will lure you here and then lull you into a dreamy serenity. It is a place of natural delights: forested mountains, sparkling lakes, crystal blue skies and starry nights. Enjoy summer days moose watching from your canoe on a placid pond, or go for thrills with a wild whitewater raft trip. Winter brings fantastic snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing.

History and culture abound at the region's southern tip around Greater Bangor.

Adventure and charm await you in Katahdin and Moosehead Lake Regions.

From the historic streets of Bangor to the solitude of Baxter State Park, from the rush of whitewater rafting on the West Branch of the Penobscot to the peaceful enjoyment of an evening's musical entertainment at the Maine Center for the Arts in Orono, the Katahdin/Moosehead region offers up adventure.

The great outdoors of Baxter State Park just beyond Millinocket offers over 200,000 acres with 46 mountain peaks, the highest being Mount Katahdin at over 5,000 feet. There are more than 175 miles of hiking trails and ten campgrounds in a park of massive grandeur. Skirting the southern perimeter of the park is one of the most spectacular whitewater rivers in the East, equal in difficulty to any river in the country, the West Branch of the Penobscot.

The Moosehead Lake area abounds with freshwater delights-great fishing, colossal boating and scenic wonders that until now you could only dream about. The lake is Maine's largest at forty miles long and twenty miles wide. This area, prized for great hunting and fishing, is also a mecca for hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing and in the winter, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and other outdoor adventures. Greenville and Rockwood at the foot of the lake form the retail and commercial hub for the area. Board the SS Katahdin, enjoy the sites and sounds of the lake and visit the Moosehead Marine Museum. South of Greenville visit Monson, famous for its black slate.

Entering the region from the south you'll enjoy the city of Bangor. Its amenities include an International Airport, access to I-95, more than 3,000 lodgings, and a bevy of retail stores and boutiques in both Bangor's downtown and the Bangor Mall area. Nearby Orono is home to the University of Maine and several cultural venues. The southern tip of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway is located north of Baxter State Park. North of Millinocket there's the Lumbermans Museum in Patten, well worth the trip.

Come and experience the Katahdin/Moosehead region, a four-season paradise.
