Portsmouth, New Hampshire – Gateway to Maine
Portsmouth,
NH is the gateway city
as you approach the state of Maine from the South. This historic seaside
town is the last New Hampshire landmark before you cross over the mighty Piscataqua River Bridge into Maine. Guests visiting southern Maine,
particularly Kittery and
York, should be sure to at least visit Portsmouth to enjoy the
charm of this seacoast settlement that dates back to 1623 – the nation’s
third oldest city.
Downtown Portsmouth is historic with cobblestone streets and brick sidewalks
leading to a tremendous selection of boutique shops, restaurants, and brew
pubs. Many restaurants feature waterfront decks.
If you want more river and
ocean views, take a ride on the Isle of Shoals Steamboat Co. to tour Portsmouth
Harbor and the outlying islands – the Isles of Shoals Islands themselves are steep in
seafaring history. The islands in Portsmouth Harbor have been hotly debated
between Maine and New Hampshire; in fact the Portsmouth Naval Base is
technically in Maine – so the Pine Tree State won that one from the Granite
State.
Portsmouth is a great walking town from the old Church in Market Square to
Strawberry Banke Museum – a living history museum of the earliest settlers to this
region. Prescott Park on the waterfront is home to summer concerts and
theatre,
and just a great place to picnic with provisions from an in town
bakery. Portsmouth hosts year round events for families, foodees and art
lovers alike.
Portsmouth also offers mall shopping and all your favorite department stores
at the Fox Run Mall.
There is so much to do in Portsmouth; you may find a day trip from Maine is
not enough. Lodging options in Portsmouth range from historic bed and
breakfasts like the Ale House
Inn on Bow Street in the heart of the Portsmouth’s
waterfront area to modern, full service hotels in the center of downtown
like the new Hilton Garden Inn.
